Chilsong is Korean for "seven stars" and refers
to the seven stars of the Great
Bear. One Korean folk legend has it the Heavenly Elk
caught the sun on it's horns then ran away, leaving the world in darkness. A
mighty hero caught up with the Heavenly Elk, shot it and returned the sun to
it's place. The four stars seen in this constellation represent the footprints
of the Heavenly Elk, while the three trailing stars are interpreted as 'arrows
of the mighty hunter.' This legend combines a daily drama, that of the sun
disappearing and reappearing, with a hero who became a great and powerful spirit
of the heavens.
