History of Chilsong

Chilsong Martial Arts was formerly The Norwich School of Korean Martial Arts. NSKMA  was formed in Norwich, England in 1972 as Norwich Jidokwan.
It's founder, Master Kwon Young-Woo, was a South Korean working in Norwich as a chicken sexer! He was, at that time, a Tang Soo Do (Moodukwan) black-belt, and subsequently joined the UKTF (ITF) where he remained until a difference of opinion with Master Rhee Ki Ha, the chief instructor.
Master Kwon then joined the WTF and helped to set up the British Taekwondo Assn. He taught WTF Taekwondo in Norwich for three years until his return to Korea in 1976. Two local martial artists began training with Kwon Young-Woo soon after his move to Norwich. They were Richard Cox (1st dan Kyokushinkai) and me, Bob Banham, one of his 15 year old student white belts.

To cut a long story short, particularly as this site is about the school rather than any individual, Master Kwon was awarded 6th dan before his return to Korea, Richard Cox 3rd dan and I, 1st dan. I took over the school in 1980 as a 2nd dan when Richard decided to concentrate on kick boxing rather than traditional Taekwondo. I progressed on my martial arts journey via a spell with British  Jidokwan (chief instructor, Master Ian Morrison formerly Ian Wheeler) where I was awarded 3rd and 4th dan WTF Taekwondo.
Then in 1992 I went to America to attend a seminar with Dr. Kimm He-Young to see for myself what his martial art of Hanmudo was like. I was impressed. Not only with the martial art, but with Grandmaster Kimm himself.  Master Kimm asked me to represent him and The World Hanmudo Association in Europe and made a promise to come to England twice a year for the next 5 years. I in turn, agreed to attend 2 seminars a year in Baton Rouge for the same time.
Since then, Hanmudo has been the main martial art taught at Chilsong, although we also frequently hold classes and courses in other allied subjects. We changed the name of the school from NSKMA at the beginning of 2004 because we thought the name limiting. We teach more than Korean Martial Arts and in a wider area than only Norwich. Chilsong means "Seven Stars" and refers to The Great Bear  or Big Dipper (Ursa Major). Read more...
